i work in nonprofits mostly, until i can convince the powers of the purse to get me sonicwalls for their infastructure i tend to use a combination of pfsense for firewall and opendns for filtering. both free. pfsense is a BSD based firewall package you can deploy on an old PC and administer thru a handy web interface. and opendns is a free (or paid) content filtering dns service. opendns is pretty robust even in its free form for filtering use and i am pretty sure i have blocked webmail access like gmail at some sites using it before. the only downside is since it is by nature an external service, you have to set global settings and route around if you want to get unrestricted access for your work.
